Excited about what the New Year will bring? Start your 2018 right with amazing events and activities happening all around Sydney this January. Although we all know that Canberra is Australia’s summer capital, Sydney remains a destination of choice for those who want to be in the middle of all the excitement and fun.

Here are some great activities to look forward to in January:

The Sydney Festival

The Sydney Festival is the city’s biggest and most popular annual event. Starting on January 6 and culminating on January 28, 2018, the festival is a three-week-long celebration of culture and art. This year, the festival will hold a total of 136 events, while 47 of those offer free admission.

Ballet lovers will get to enjoy the Tree of Codes, a contemporary dance performance held at the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour. Other performances include the Barber Shop Chronicles performed by London’s National Theatre, and aquatic performances by Aquasonic, the world’s first underwater band.

For a more interactive experience, you can visit the Four Thousand Fish art installation, where visitors can try their hand at creating ice sculptures of fish, or visit Hyde Park for a Ghost Train experience, a choose-your-own-adventure style virtual fairground ride.

With many events to choose from, the Sydney Festival is not to be missed!

Watch Films Under the Stars

If you’re passionate about films, the St George OpenAir Cinema is the perfect night out for you and your company. Located at Mrs Macquaries Point, this outdoor cinematic experience lets you enjoy the best of summer evenings, with screenings every day from January 7 to February 17, 2018.

Here, you can sit under the stars as the screen rises up from the bay, while gazing at the picturesque views of the Opera House and the Bridge. Some of the films in the roster include Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water. You may also catch blockbuster hits like Star Wars: The Last Jedi if you missed it in 2017.

With a wide repertoire of films, there is a little something for everyone at the St George OpenAir.

Sample the Best of Short Film

If short films are more your style, try Australia’s biggest short film festival — Flickerfest. Flickerfest features over 100 short films, which have been carefully chosen from over 2,400 independent entries. Flickerfest runs from January 12 to 21 at the Bondi Pavilion.

Sing Along to Country Music

From the 19th to 28th of January, music lovers can gather at the Toyota Country Music Festival, where over 700 artists will perform in over 120 venues across Sydney. You can choose from a broad range of ticketed and free events. For a free event, Peel Street has over 600 buskers performing both covers and their own unique compositions.
